Charleston Southern finished in third place in the 2023 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Over the two day event, the Bucs placed 10 athletes along with a relay team on the podium.
Sprints/Hurdles
Shawn Langley Jr. finished third in the 400m with a time of 47.69. He later competed with
Luciano Custodio,
Rob Howorth, and
Garrett Ricardo on the 4x400m relay team that finished fourth with a time of 3:17.84, the ninth fastest 4x4 time in school history.
Jumps
Holden Gerth cleared a personal best 2.06m in the high jump and to take third place in the conference. He now holds the second-best high jump mark in CSU history. Â
Throws
Michael Calhoun took second in weight throw with a personal best mark of 17.76m and now ranks third on the all-time CSU weight throw list.Â
Distance
Rob Howorth takes home two gold medals on Saturday, winning the 800m and mile championships. In the 800m, he crossed the line at 1:53.53 and finished the mile in 4:12.17. The Bucs actually swept the podium in the mile with
Micah Gilpatric and
Alan Deogracias taking second and third.
Micah Gilpatric took home the 3K championship in dominant fashion, crossing the line nearly eight seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
In the 5K, four Buccaneers ran CSU top-ten times including
Alan Deogracias' new school record of 14.32.57 that earned him second place.
Jaden Kingsley now has the second-fastest indoor 5K at 14:41.20,
Caleb Kenyon is fourth at 14:49.35, and
Sam Waldin ranks sixth at 14:54.17.
Academic
Michael Calhoun was named to the Big South Indoor Track & Field All-Academic team for the second year in a row.
