CLEMSON, S.C. – Charleston Southern's Braxton Drummond won the long jump and the Bucs' 4x400M relay team finished first as well to highlight the opening day of competition at the Bob Pollock Invitational on Friday.
Drummond followed up on his title last week at the Tar Heel Open with an even better showing, jumping 7.60M, only .03 meters shy of the mark that earned him a spot in the NCAA Championships last season. The junior from Spartanburg, S.C. bested a field of 26 in claiming the top spot.
CSU's top relay team of Rozzie Johnson, Kuaniyal Chol, EJ Reddick and Jarad Jeter ran the 4x400 relay in 3:27.06 to pace the field, besting a second place squad from The Citadel.
Senior Richie German performed well again for first-year head coach Roosevelt Lofton and CSU in his first event after being named Big South Field Performer of the Week last week. German finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 17.15M. Clarence Gallop also had a strong showing, setting a CSU freshman record and placing seventh with a throw of 16.34M.
Freshman distance runner Zachary Long continued a solid start to his indoor season as well, running the mile in 4:32.18 to finish just .08 seconds off the top spot in the 13-man field.
Sophomore Alex Phillips ran strong in the 200M dash, taking sixth place with a time of 22.89 seconds.
The Bucs will return to action for day two of the Bob Pollock Invitational on Saturday morning, with events continuing until 3:30 p.m.
